Julie – Saved £595 by taking out our Provisional Only Policy.

Julie was 18 when she started to learn to drive, she was full time at University and was so busy at weekends with all her hobbies that she had very little time left to put some serious hours in on the road.

When we spoke to Julie about how long she thought it would be before she passed her test, she said it would be at least 8 months – she was only having the occasional lesson and her brother took 2 years to pass his test so she thought she’d take quite some time.

She decided to take out the ‘Provisional Only’ policy and paid the £359 for the year, knowing that if she passed her test early, her premium would increase significantly.

10 months later Julie called to say that she’d managed to pass her test.

As she hadn’t taken out an annual policy, her premium increased from £359 to £1773 from the day she passed her test. But, as she only had two months left to run on her policy, she only had to pay an extra £291 to the end of the year.

Julies total premium for the year was just £650. Had she taken out an annual policy, this would have been £1245.

Morale of the story – if you honestly believe you won’t pass your test for at least 8 months, then taking out a Provisional Only policy could be the best option – if you do pass your test earlier though, the extra additional premium could be significant – see what happened to Paul…
